Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort is a first-class golf course designed by the renowned Schmidt-Curley team. The golf club sits on a hill outside Chiang Mai, with views from almost every hole. The course was a great experience, one of the best in Thailand and has won numerous awards since its inception. An additional nine holes are scheduled to open in November 2015.

If you're not very precise, your wedges will get a lot of practice, as this course is known for its numerous bunkers, with nearly every green guarded by a swarm of bunkers. If you can get away from the sand, you'll enjoy playing the manicured fairways, and once on the greens they're fast and true, but can be illegible.

The front nine is fairly flat and the first real test is the 3rd hole, a par 5 with water running off the left and the usual bunkers protecting the green. Hole 8 is another challenging hole with no fewer than 10 bunkers, 5 of which protect the front and back of the green.

On the back nine you have a great view from the 12th tee and then you can really open up your shoulders and go downhill on the 13th, along the left side where the watery green can be difficult to access. The 16th is another difficult and long par 4 with a large bunker protecting the green and a false front that discards any short balls and balls slightly to the right of the green.

The course has a spectacular par 5 finish from the raised tees to a fairly wide landing area, if you hit the ball long and straight you have the chance to hit the green in two, but most of us One will land before the river, which allows for relatively easy access to elevated and sloping greens.
